Different group and different interests. Both worthwhile, in my opinion. UFT is a teacher's union. This forum was more focused on the parents and their kids. Both are very important. But not identical interests.

How disgusting. Smith & Halloran should immediately resign their elected positions and if found gulty I hope they both get the book thrown at them. FYI, I heard that the 2 from Spring Valley are Democrats but got that from another blog. Taabone resigned today but I don't think Savino has yet done so.
As for Smith, how the hell did he think he was going to win, by his looks? I believe Joe Lhota is currently in the lead, the Primary is in September and today is Aprl 3rd. What the heck was he going to do, waltz in and get his name magically put on the ballot.

Thanks for your reply. So far I see a vast difference between Quinn and Kurland, and MANY NY politicians fall short of their rhetoric. I appreciate your skepticism and it is worth knowing, though so far I see far more good than negative in Yetta.

You need to check her record and how she denied benefits to her now defunct ESL academy (Hello World). Workers who should have been on salary were hired as provisional, trans folks fired so they did not collect medical benefits during their transition, school employees forced to work in her last campaign. Her actions were made illegal years ago after an historic labor law case against Microsoft concerning provision workers vs. those on payroll. It will all be coming out soon enough.
As a leftist (way left of any Democrat) I loved what Yetta says - then I found out that her practice never matches those 'progressive' tones? Do we really want another Christine Quinn- another former 'radical' (I knew her when she was at the Anti-Violence Project) whose rhetoric fell way short of her practice?

The new breed of food trucks are definitely not "roach coaches". Maybe I'm just saying that because I know the owner of one personally?

And I don't think that Sandy was necessarily the impetus for them showing up at NYU. That area is pretty poorly served by brick-and-mortar restaurants, and the food trucks often get chased away from areas where they are in competition (like where I work - more on that in bit).

I wish I could give you reviews of the ones you've listed, but none of those visit my block. Instead, we have Wafels & Dinges (no review b/c I can't see eating a waffle w/ whipped cream for lunch - especially a cold waffle!), a different Korean truck (two guys' names that I can't remember), Rickshaw Dumplings (expensive, tiny portions and the pork & chive dumplings I got were dry as dust), Eddie's Pizza (haven't tried it yet, not a big pizza fan), and a different burger truck (haven't tried, I rarely eat meat at lunchtime. But I did once have the BLT burger at his restaurant and was not terribly impressed). One that we used to have that I can vouch for is the Red Hook Lobster Pound's Big Red, which is expensive but delicious. They say they'll be back in the spring, once the pound reopens after Sandy rehab.

We also have Moishe's Falafel, which I like, every weekday. But they're really a sidewalk cart, not a truck. And the trucks do get chased. I think they may also fight over the one spot they usually occupy on my work block, but there are a lot of ethnic restaurants on my work block, and I think they pressure the NYPD to keep the food-truck presence to a minimum.

I agree! Obama will win this election. But you do him a disservice if you don't remind your readers that without a Democratic Senate and a more closely-divided House (I don't believe we can take it back this year, much as I wish we could) his second term will be even more of struggle than the first. Unless we want to see him reduced to governing solely by executive order and veto, we need to do whatever we can to give him a more Democratic Congress.

Now...Hillary Clinton and/or Joe Biden? I very much doubt that either of them will be on the ticket in 2016, for one very good reason: age. Biden will be 73 in 2016; Clinton will be 69 in 2016, and 73 in 2020! The 2016 nomination is Biden's for the asking by right of his current office, but I have a feeling he won't ask. Granted the impressive energy Clinton's brought to her present job, neither campaigning for, nor being president is a job for someone tired. I'm her age, and believe me, there are days you really feel it. Clinton will be handing in her portfolio after the elections; it shouldn't be hard to tell shortly thereafter whether she's even interested.

Can't see him winning this, don't care if Perry hasn't had primary in a long time. He is a incumbent who hasn't disgraced the seat, or done anything terrible to deserve voting in Hinds who seems okay, but hasn't done anything to distinguish himself.

The story is the story.
A myth that bears repeating as historical reference to a time of conflicted/afflicted/dualist thinking. It does not form a healthy spiritual concept for belief and right conduct.
The myth of a vengeful god that favors one over another is a barbaric one.
It is a sad legacy that cannot hide messages of exceptionalism, punishment to 'the other', a belief system that depends upon commitment to a capricious, controlling god, and the attachment to a land promised to 'the chosen'.
If we remain 'enslaved' to such stories, we remain stuck in debating -or congratulating ourselves- about how good we can be, but remain unable to truly -and permanently- transcend our lowest nature. -to enter into a true 'promised land' open to all !

The iPad may be more totable than a full-blown laptop, but it's not portable enough to pop in my purse and take along for several hours of sightseeing. I'd been hoping Apple would release some sort of tablet 7 inch before I broke down and bought the full- (and only-) sized iPad 2. And while I find a 10 inch tablet screen great for reading, Web surfing, viewing photos and watching TV, I still thought it might be nice to have a tablet small and light enough to travel with me a little more frequently.

I can't test a 7-inch iPad, of course, since one doesn't exist. But I did get my hands on a review 5 inch tablet. And I discovered that since I've become used to the real estate of a full 10-inch display, it's hard to downsize.

7 inch android tablet is lighter as well as smaller than the iPad -- 13.58 oz vs. 21 oz. -- but it's weighty enough that I wouldn't take it out with me for the afternoon on a whim. The difference between the Tab and even smaller Kindle (8.5 oz) feels significant -- I have taken my Kindle along on a day of sightseeing in order to refer to some e-guidebooks, and found the added weight just this side of acceptable. (Keep in mind I'm usually dragging around a full-sized digital SLR when traveling as well, so that's using up a good amount of my allotted gadget grams.)

The little Tab has tended to sit on my desk, even when I'm relaxing and would have expected to be happier using a smaller, lighter device than the iPad. Part of that may be the Galaxy's boxier design -- sleek form factor matters to me in a device that I'm carrying and holding a lot, and Apple definitely has the edge there. I simply enjoy the physical experience of using the iPad hardware more, due to its form factor as well as screen size.

By policy, the Park Slope Food Coop joins existing boycotts - it doesn't initiate them. There are no international boycotts of China, Turkey, or any of the countries you mentioned. The campaign at the Coop is about the BDS movement against Israel - it's a focused issue, and it is entirely about human rights for both Palestinians and Israelis by putting pressure on the abusive state. Of course the BDS movement "singles out" one nation - that's the whole point of this particular movement! It doesn't preclude people's organizing around separate issues. I and other Coop members I know who are pro-BDS are also active in campaigns for environmental sustainability, anti-racism, prisoners' rights, open source software development, and many others. Unfortunately, there's plenty of oppression and injustice in the world. By the way, I'm not sure if Meditalia meets the criteria for boycott given that it's a joint venture, so that's a bad example to highlight.

Pardon me? Maybe I should forward you some of the outraged emails I got about this. This isn't even about Israel/Palestine - that's something we don't have a brief for here, I think - it's about some people saying, hey, my activism is more important than yours, and if you don't like that, I'll shut you down. I don't see the solidarity in that.
Nor is this a question of privilege. Check out the Center, and educate yourself about the work it does in communities of color. There's this old homophobic stereotype that we're all just a bunch of rich white guys with gym memberships and fabulous apartments. That is, simply put, not true, and if you like, I can take you to GMHC - for example - and show what the reality looks like.

And quite frankly, Liza, do me a huge favor and don't EVER warn me in public again. I'll take what you say under advisement, but you should know better, and you do.

Electronic cigarettes eliminates the tobacco from smoking, giving the smoker a safer cigarette with far fewer health consequences than those caused by traditional cigarettes and cigars. It accomplishes this through a system that allows the smoker to enjoy smoking even in restricted areas restaurants, bars, airplanes etc. No need to worry about second hand smoke.

Personally I am pro-Palestinian and despise Netanyahu, and I actually think giving Palestine UN status would be a GOOD thing. But I find the BDS movement, at least as I have encountered it at the Park Slope Food Co-op, to be hypocritical and disingenuous. Had they advocated for a set of human rights criteria that would trigger a boycott, I could see their point. But they target Israel and ignore nations like China, Thailand, Turkey, etc. which have a similar or worse human rights record as Israel. The co-op carries products from all these countries but the BDS movement ONLY targets Israel. I guess Kurds, Armenians, Tibetans, etc. etc. are not important to them.

I can't speak for Michael and I can't speak to the issues within the LGBT community (my main info is through my wife's dojo, which seems pretty inclusive and tolerant of all races and ideas). But I can say that the BDS movement as it manifests itself in NYC is highly flawed and the fact that they will ally with groups like
Workers World Party really makes it hard to take them seriously. North Korea is okay but Israel must be boycotted? I really don't get how THAT works.

Of course this hits on many complex issues: LGBT, race, I/P...and the BDS movement throws in communism into the mix with some of their allies. The BDS message gets blurred when they ally with some of these folks and when they try to get groups like the Park Slope Food Co-op or the LGBT center to join the boycott. Of course my experience when I was in Israel suggests to me that the answer lies not in boycotts but in boosting the economic opportunities of EVERYONE in the area, particularly Palestinians. People I talked to on all sides back then wanted peace specifically because it was good for business. Give Israelis and Palestinians an economic stake in peace and stability and it will be much easier to achieve. Wreck both economies and no one will have a reason to want peace...except for the deaths of all their young people, which SHOULD suggest peace is better but too often sparks vengeance and hence more violence.
